Can someone tell me why digital cable is better than what comcast had before?

I have had NOTHING BUT trouble with my digital cable transition and its been a year since they made us transfer everything over to digital. My little boxes are either broken, or they arent recieving signals so i always have to call COMCAST and have their dumb operator send signals to reactivate one of my 3 tvs. Ive never had more trouble with this not to mention it takes longer to change the channel...

advice needed from someone knowledgeable with dtv transition?

I want to buy a portable tv for the holidays and it says that the unit will need a converter box to be operated.
