Camcorder for making indie films?

I’m looking for a decent camcorder to shoot small independent films with. I was looking at the Canon HV20 & HV30. Those seem on the cheaper side but are also nice quality camcorders. With the HV20 and HV30, I realized they shoot tapes instead of DVDs. How would I transport that to a DVD? Any other camcorders that anyone can suggest? I’d like it to have decent quality at night as well....
