Can you use a Sony camcorder with iMovie on a Mac?

Are there any iMovie plug-ins I can download on my mac?
I really enjoy using iMovie to make home videos, but some more effects would be nice! Are there any effects plug-ins for free or are there any other programs i can purchase with lots of effects and stuff? I don’t much about video editing software, i just tried iMovie out for the first time and was amazed at how great my movie turned out and how simple it was!
