I can’t watch one channel while I record another. Do I need a new VCR or TV?

Help my cable TV needs a converter now because of the Digital TV Transition. I hooked it up, to my VCR and TV, but now I can’t watch one channel while I record another. I have to watch the channel I’m recording. What can I do? Do I need a new VCR / DVD recorder? If I do, which one should I get? I have a very old TV. Do I have to get rid of my old TV? It works very well, and I would hate to get rid of it. Also, every time I try to record on my VCR, I get a message to check my TV System.

Digital Transition Question about Antennas?

I have an older tv and I don’t have cable. I bought the conveter box, hooked it up and the tv was really clear. However, the picture is constantly cutting out and ’searching for signal’. Does this mean that I need a better quality antenna for my reception or is that just the way the digital tv signal is?
