I supposed the bank robbery took place during the “dog days” of summer, the hottest days. // I should have trusted my memory about this.

    DOG DAYS:
Name for the most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to Aug. 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun. In the latitude of the Mediterranean region this period coincided with hot days that were plagued with disease and discomfort. The time of conjunction varies with difference in latitude, and because of the precession of the equinoxes it changes gradually over long periods in all latitudes.

Here’s an interesting take on why that title was chosen, courtesy of someone responding to a similar question on the IMDb thread:
“The Dog Days of summer” is a very old and very American saying {{MY NOTE: Actually, it isn’t strictly American.}}. It refers to the hottest and most humid time of the summer. (What is “DDA” if not a truly “American” story?) Sweat was an integral element of the movie “Dog Day Afternoon”: 1) It’s hot in Brooklyn with the “heat” in the bank robber’s personal lives mounting; 2) Everybody– the robbers, the kidnapped bank employees and the police & FBI– are finding the situation more and more tense–thus hotter and hotter– as the afternoon wears on; and 3) Turning off the air conditioner in the bank in such heat was a weapon that the police used to put pressure on Sonny to come out. Everywhere you look in this movie, people are sweating.

    IMDB trivia:
The original working title was “Boys in the Bank.” Director Sidney Lumet hated it because he thought it made the film appear to be a “light, fluffy comedy,” and he had it changed to “Dog Day Afternoon.”

Can you imagine this film with that title?! I suppose they were playing on the title “Boys in the Band” (1970).

It symbolizes a normal day. To say tuesday afternoon is “another dog day afternoon”, is to say that it is normal, or average, or even boring/listless. The purpose of calling the film this is to show that this kind of thing (a bank robbery) could happen anytime, anywhere.

    Dog Day:

1.The hot, sultry period of summer between early July and early September.
    2.A period of stagnation.
