By law, any TV made after around 2007 (I can’t remember the exact date, but all modern TVs) must, by law, use a DTV tuner. Flat screen TVs will work fine, just have an antenna handy and you’ll be able to pick up local DTV channels.

As a quick update, Wikipedia says “By March 1, 2007 all televisions regardless of screen size, and all interface devices which include a tuner (VCR, DVD player/recorder, DVR) must include a built-in ATSC DTV tuner.”

  2. Broadcast Engineer says:

Yes, unless someone is selling an out of date television any newly produced model made since last March 2008 is ready to receive the ATSC over the air signal used in US television broadcasts.

Look for ATSC tuner in the specifications.

For non US TV sets check for the standard used in your country.

Any TV you buy today is going to have a ATSC tuner and will work after the dtv transition. The thing you have to watch out for is to make sure you buying a tv with a built-in tuner and not just a monitor that needs an external tuner. Monitors are cheaper, but ask one of the store employees to make sure it does have a built-in tuner.
