Interpreting ASVAB practice test results, big picture advice?
March 13, 2010 by: nickadminHello and thank you for your service!
I am 34 years old, married, hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music (3.0+ GPA, 4 year non-tech degree, state university) and have been self employed as a musician/music teacher for the past 10 years. I am interested in joining the military. I am undecided on which path. I want to contribute to something bigger. The military has been an unanswered calling for as long as I can remember. If I wait any longer I may miss my chance. My timing is bad, I know, because the services are flooded with recruits due to the recession.
Informed advice would be appreciated. I’ve been reading online, talking to enlisted friends and searching around. I met with a recruitment officer today and took the ASVAB practice test.
I like the idea of working on a Navy Submarine although my friends and family think I’m nuts for wanting to serve where I won’t see the light of day for months at a time. I’m trying to open my mind a little bit and avoid getting “job locked” but I’m curious if I can make the SECF rating, as a Radio-man on a Submarine? Math skills need brushing up, electronics skills need to be learned and time is short. Don’t take it from me… here are my test results.
After completing the ASVAB practice test, this came up on the screen:
——–: WK : AR : PC : MK : VE
——–:—-:—-:—-:———
RAW:—-:-34-:-20-:-15-:-16-:-50-
STANDARD:-60-:-51-:-61-:-54-:-62-
AFQT = 75
I wont make excuses, but my final score will be higher after refreshing my basic algebra and speeding up my basic math without the calculator.
My main question is, what are the two rows of numbers under the category abbreviations? “RAW” and “STANDARD”?
Which row represents my score for each category? If it is the “STANDARD” row it looks like I’ll qualify for some of the jobs I’m looking at. If it is the “RAW” row… ouch. I want to be able to make calculations like AR+MK+VE = X.
I am interested in some type of computer/electronics job. Maybe being a radio-man, computer communications, submarines interest me…
Any advice, big picture or technical, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

I think your afqt is what matters the most. since you scored a 75 on the practice you should be qualified for just about any job. But the original test will be longer. all those abbreviations are for certain jobs like SF. Those types of things you need high numbers in. Sorry Its not much help.
Well guy sorry to tell you it’s to late for the USN, USMC, USAF or USCG. The only option for first term enlistment is the Army. Maximum age for enlistment in the Navy is 33 and must be in Basic training before your 34th birthday and there are no age waivers period.
The good news is with your degree is you will be enlisted in Pay grade E-3 upon successfulul completion of basic. You scored a respectable score on your practice asvab and generally you’ll score plus or minus 5 points of your projected score.
If you have more than 1 child, you’ll need dependency waiver. Not a big deal if your finances are in order.
I’m reasonably sure your too old for the officer programs, but it does not hurt to ask the Army Recruiter. In the Navy past 27 and you can forget about a commission except for Warrant Officer or LDO.
Good Luck.
