Camcorder Head Cleaner Query?

At the moment i have two mini dv tapes that have purple and green lines going through the video when played back on the camcorder.

I have been told to get mini dv head cleaners to clean the camcorder head but i was wondering, would this fix the playback of the dv tapes i already have or will it just fix the problem for future recordings?

    Using a head cleaner tape will clean the heads on the camcorder. The record and playback heads are different parts in the tape drive mechanism.

    If the tapes you have were recorded by dirty record heads resulting in the playback you see, then what is already on the tapes will not be changed and future recordings may be fixed.

    If the tapes you have were recorded with clean record heads, but the playback heads are dirty resulting in the playback you see, then what is already on the tapes will not be changed and the clean playback heads will no longer send the purple/green lines.

    It is possible that using a tape head cleaning tape will not resolve this at all…

    You can check to see if the tapes are bad by playing them in another camcorder or in a miniDV tape deck – if one is available.
